Lake Naivasha Boat Rides
from Nairobi — 1hr 40min Away
Hippo safaris, flamingo sightings, and sunset cruises run by people who live on this lake — not in a Nairobi office.
💬 Book via WhatsAppIf you are searching for Lake Naivasha boat rides from Nairobi, you will find two kinds of operators: those who manage bookings from the city and send whoever is available to the dock, and those who are at the water every morning before the sun comes up. Watamu Boat Rides is the second kind.
We have been operating from Karagita Beach on Moi South Lake Road for over 10 years. Our captains live near the lake. They know which papyrus channel the hippos used last night, where the fish eagles are nesting this month, and how the Mau Escarpment looks at golden hour from the middle of the water. That knowledge is what makes your ride different — and it is not something you can manage from a Nairobi office.
Our 5.0-star Google rating is built entirely from guests who actually got on our boats. No sponsored reviews. No aggregator listings. Just people who came from Nairobi, Westlands, Karen, and Kiambu — and came back.
Getting here from Nairobi — the full route guide
The drive from Nairobi to Lake Naivasha is one of Kenya's most scenic road journeys. Here is exactly how to get from the city to our dock — including the stops worth making along the way.
Nairobi — join the A104
From Nairobi CBD or Westlands, take Waiyaki Way westbound and merge onto the A104 (Nakuru Road) toward Mai Mahiu. From Karen or Langata, use Ngong Road toward Dagoretti then join the A104. Leave Nairobi by 6:30am on weekdays to avoid traffic through Kikuyu and Limuru.
Limuru — the escarpment begins
As you pass through Limuru, the road begins its dramatic descent toward the Rift Valley floor. Tea farms line both sides of the road. Start looking left for your first glimpse of the valley opening up below you.
Rift Valley Viewpoint, near Elementaita. Pull over at the viewpoint just before the descent into Mai Mahiu. On a clear morning you can see the full sweep of the Great Rift Valley — Lake Elementaita, Longonot crater, and on very clear days, Lake Naivasha itself glinting in the distance. This is one of Kenya's great landscape moments and it is completely free to stop. Vendors sell roasted maize and cold drinks here — a good excuse to stretch your legs before the final leg.
Mai Mahiu — descend to the valley floor
The descent from Limuru to Mai Mahiu drops over 600 metres in under 20km. Take this stretch carefully — the road curves sharply and trucks run slowly. Once at the bottom, the air warms noticeably and the road flattens. You are now on the Rift Valley floor.
Naivasha town — turn onto Moi South Lake Road
Enter Naivasha town and follow signs toward the lake. Turn left onto Moi South Lake Road — the main lakeside road that passes most of the hotels, lodges, and landing beaches. The road is fully tarmacked and well-signposted all the way.
Karagita Beach — our dock
Continue along Moi South Lake Road to Karagita Beach. Look for the Watamu Boat Rides sign. Parking is available on site. Total drive from Nairobi CBD: approximately 1 hour 40 minutes off-peak. Allow 2 hours 15 minutes on Friday evenings or public holiday weekends.
Our boat ride experiences
We offer three core rides from our dock at Karagita Beach. All rides include certified life jackets for every passenger, a trained naturalist-captain, and low-emission four-stroke engines that keep the lake quiet enough for wildlife.
Hippo Pod Morning Safari
Our most popular ride. Run before 10am when hippos are still in the water and active. Expect close encounters with 20–30 resident pods in the papyrus channels. Perfect for families and first-time visitors.
Golden Hour Sunset Cruise
The hour before sunset is when the lake comes fully alive. Flamingos move to the shallows, hippos begin their evening feeding, and the Mau Escarpment turns copper. The ride people from Nairobi come back to repeat.
Private Charter — Full Lake
Book the entire boat for your group. We stop wherever the wildlife takes you — Crescent Island channel, open water, papyrus beds. Ideal for corporate outings, birthdays, anniversaries, and families who want their own pace.
What the lake looks like this week
[WEEK OF — UPDATE THIS EACH MONDAY]
This week: hippo activity is highest in the early morning channel near the papyrus beds on the south shore. The flamingo colony has moved toward the Crescent Island shallows — clearly visible from the water on our morning ride. Water levels are good following recent rains. All our standard routes are running. The Mau Escarpment has been clear most mornings this week — ideal for sunset cruise photography.

Lake Naivasha wildlife calendar
This is what makes Lake Naivasha unlike any other freshwater destination in Kenya: the wildlife changes every month. This calendar is built from over 10 years of daily rides on the lake — knowledge no Nairobi-based operator can replicate.
Dry and calm. Hippos highly visible in large morning pods. Fish eagles nesting. Clear skies most days — excellent for photography.
Peak dry season. Water clear and levels steady. Hippos easy to spot from the boat. Pelicans active near papyrus edges. Cool mornings.
First short rains arrive late March. Water levels rising. Wildlife very active before the rains. Darters and cormorants nesting in lakeshore trees.
Long rains peak. The lake is lush and full. Rides still run — the lake in rain is dramatic. Fewer tourists means a quieter, more personal experience.
Rains tapering. Papyrus thick and vivid green. Bird diversity at its highest. Water lily blooms across the open lake. Magical scenery.
Flamingo numbers begin building on the shallower northern shores. Cool dry-season air. Hippos very active at dusk. Great month for sunset cruises.
Peak flamingo season. Crescent Island shallows can be pink with thousands of lesser flamingos. Cooler temperatures. Hippo pods at their most sociable.
Our personal favourite month. Flamingos still present. Hippos active morning and evening. Clear skies, cool air, low tourist numbers. Highly recommended.
African fish eagles at their most vocal — the lake's iconic call echoes across calm mornings. Flamingo numbers thinning. Spectacular sunsets.
Short rains mid-October. Lake full and dramatic. Hippo pods split — smaller groups visible across more of the lake. Migrant birds arriving.
Migrant birds from Europe and North Africa in residence — waders, storks, sandpipers. Lake is high and beautiful. Dramatic cloud formations at sunset.
Christmas and New Year fills the lake with Nairobi visitors. Hippos active year-round. Book well ahead for December weekends — we fill up fast.
