Best Day Activity from Nairobi: Boat Ride & Crescent Island Walk | Watamu Boat Rides

If you've got one free day in Nairobi and want it to count, this is the combination that delivers the most for the least effort: a Lake Naivasha hippo boat ride paired with a Crescent Island walking safari. Two completely different ways to see wildlife, back to back, all within a single day trip from the city.

Why this pairing works so well

A boat ride and a walking safari sound similar on paper, but they give you opposite experiences. On the boat, you're gliding past hippo pods in papyrus channels — close, calm, and entirely from the water. On Crescent Island, you're on foot, walking freely among giraffes, zebras, waterbuck, and antelope with no predators around to worry about.

Most other Nairobi day trips give you one type of wildlife encounter. This one gives you two, and the logistics line up naturally — Crescent Island sits just offshore from the lake, so the same boat that takes you past the hippos can drop you there to walk.

The Combo

Hippo Boat Ride + Crescent Island Walk

Start with a boat ride from our dock at Karagita Beach, cruising past resident hippo pods and along the papyrus-lined shore. From there, we can arrange a stop or transfer to Crescent Island, where you'll disembark and walk among giraffes and zebras on open grassland — no fences, no vehicle, just you and the wildlife on foot.

Total time for both activities is typically 2.5 to 4 hours, depending on how long you want on the island.

Good to know

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake, so you won't see flamingos here — those belong to Kenya's soda lakes like Nakuru and Bogoria further north. What you will see is hippos, fish eagles, and on Crescent Island, giraffes and zebras grazing in the open, which is honestly the bigger draw for most visitors anyway.

Ride and activity options

Private Charter — Full Day Half day+ Groups wanting both activities at their own pace

Planning the trip

This combination works best with an early start — leaving Nairobi by 6:30am gives you the best hippo visibility and the coolest part of the day for walking on Crescent Island before the midday heat sets in. Most guests are back in Nairobi by mid-to-late afternoon, making it a genuine single-day round trip rather than something that needs an overnight stay.

If you'd rather take it slower, staying one night near the lake lets you add the Golden Hour Sunset Cruise to the same trip the following evening.
