This is the activity Naivasha is actually known for, and it's not close. A boat ride here puts you within metres of resident hippo pods, gliding papyrus channels, and open water framed by the Rift Valley escarpment — all from the safety of a boat with a trained captain.
Most rides run 1 to 3 hours, life jackets are provided for everyone on board, and morning departures (before 10am) give you the best chance of seeing hippos active and visible in the water.
If you only have time for one activity in Naivasha, this is it. Everything else on this list is worth doing if you have an extra day — the boat ride is the one thing you shouldn't skip.
Lake Naivasha does not have flamingos — it's a freshwater lake, which is exactly why it supports such a strong resident hippo population instead. Flamingos belong to Kenya's soda lakes, like Nakuru and Bogoria, further north. What Naivasha gives you instead is hippos, fish eagles, pelicans, and cormorants, up close and almost guaranteed.

Crescent Island walking safari
A short boat transfer takes you to Crescent Island, where you can walk freely among giraffes, zebras, and waterbuck — no predators here, so it's safe to explore on foot. A great pairing with your boat ride.
Rift Valley Viewpoint
On the drive in from Nairobi, the viewpoint near Elementaita gives you a sweeping view of the Great Rift Valley floor. Free to stop, and worth the 15 minutes if you have a camera handy.
Hell's Gate National Park
Just south of the lake, Hell's Gate offers cycling and walking trails through dramatic gorges and rock towers — a good half-day activity if you're staying overnight near Naivasha.
Naivasha town and its nightlife
More lively than most visitors expect, with restaurants serving fresh lake fish and nyama choma, plus bars and live music on weekend nights — a good reason to stay over rather than rushing back to Nairobi.

Getting to the lake
If you're coming from Nairobi, the drive runs via Waiyaki Way onto the A104 through Mai Mahiu, descending the Rift Valley escarpment before reaching Naivasha town and turning onto Moi South Lake Road. Our dock is at Karagita Beach, and the whole route is tarmacked and well signposted — roughly 1 hour 40 minutes off-peak.
Most visitors treat the boat ride as the anchor for a day trip: arrive in the morning, do the hippo safari, have lunch in town, and decide from there whether Crescent Island or Hell's Gate fits into the rest of the day.
